Description
British Sicily Tour
Once upon a time there was a wine called the English wine which became the most famous wine in London and the British Empire, when it changed its name and was called Marsala. Once upon a time there was an English admiral who toasted his victory in battle with a glass of this wine, who won but died of his wounds, to whom one of the most important squares in London is dedicated, in which there is a monument in his memory: Nelson, in Trafalgar Square.
The early 19th century is when Sicily was effectively a British protectorate, as was Malta. It was the period of the rise of Marsala wine, an English invention, attributed to the entrepreneur John Woodhouse from Liverpool even earlier, in 1773. There were many Britons, but above all the English, who arrived from Yorkshire and the Midlands following the entrepreneurial route of wine and other Sicilian rich resources such as sulfur, for example. The British presence was predominant not only in the economy, but also in the high society of Palermo in the early 19th century. Furthermore, the active political role of the British Empire was decisive for the end of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, the British Navy was crucial and fundamental for having also allowed Garibaldi to land in Marsala on May 11, 1860 and officially start the unity of Italy.
